Vickers and Barrow are names synonymous with the development of the submarine. Hundreds of submarines covering virtually every class have been built for the Royal Navy and foreign Navies. This site is dedicated to not only to those who have served on Her Majesty's Submarines but also to those employees past and present whose skills and efforts have given pride to the phrase 'Barrow built' and made the name Vickers known and respected throughout the world.

1918 L 52 Launched
1921 Montclare (F85) 1939 - 1958 Launched
1940 Tuna (N 94) HMS Tuna attacks the Italian submarine Brin with torpedoes and gunfire in the Bay of Biscay about 55 nautical miles east of the Gironde estuary. The Italian submarine escapes unharmed. Later HMS Tuna sinks the French tug Chassiron with gunfire about 25 nautical miles west-south-west of the Gironde estuary.
1941 United (P 44) Launched
1942 Safari (P 211) HMS Safari sinks the Italian sailing vessel Eufrasia with gunfire in the Gulf of Hammamet, Tunisa.
1942 U-565 German submarine U-535 sinks HMS Partridge 50 miles west of Oran.
1942 Rorqual (N 74) HMS Rorqual torpedoes and damages the Italian merchant Piero Foscari in the Gulf of Gaeta, Italy north-east of Ischia island.
1943 Universal (P 57) HMS Universal torpedoes and sinks the Italian merchant La Foce south of Chiavari, Genova, Italy.
1944 Scorcher (P 258) Launched
1944 Turpin (P 354) Completed

The interim sonar prior to 2046 was 2061 not 2062. I worked on 2031z and 2061 between 1985 & 1987 at ARE Portland North. If I looked up from my desk I had a great view of a portion of Portland Harbour and lots of Weymouth Bay.

My uncle, John Leonard Newland went down on the Thorn. My dad was only about 6 when it happened but he still lays a poppy for him every year at the Royal Navy Memorial at Chatham where he is commemorated.

My father Frederick Percival Collins was a leading torpedo man He served on HMS Medway and was in China 1931 I have family photos which are badly water /oil stained due I was told because they were in his wallet when his ship was torpedoed. No mention of this on his service records.
