This website is brought to you in association with the Barrow-in-Furness Branch of the Submariners Association and is the premier UK internet resource for Submariners and anyone interested in Royal Navy Submarines.

Vickers and Barrow are names synonymous with the development of the submarine. Hundreds of submarines covering virtually every class have been built for the Royal Navy and foreign Navies. This site is dedicated to not only to those who have served on Her Majesty's Submarines but also to those employees past and present whose skills and efforts have given pride to the phrase 'Barrow built' and made the name Vickers known and respected throughout the world.

1943 Stygian (P 249) Launched
1943 Visigoth (P 76) Launched
1944 Strongbow (P 235) HMS Strongbow sinks three Japanese sailing vessels with gunfire off the west coast of Sumatra
1952 Sidon (P 259) Taken in hand at Devonport for intermediate docking and for fitting an escape trunk. Completed 9th January 1953.
1974 Superb (S 109) Launched
2018 Astute (S 119) Type 23 frigate HMS St Albans and hunter-killer sub HMS Astute have been operating alongside each other, honing their Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) skills. But it was also an opportunity for them to go up against each other, testing their ability to deal with the threat one another brings to the battlefield.

2To be the best at what we do, it is essential that we train both against and alongside the very best,2 Commander John Cromie, Commanding Officer of HMS St Albans, said.

"HMS Astute provides that partner with whom we can polish our skills to the highest level."

This latest training exercise took place in a Scottish loch and was a chance to sharpen and refine procedures necessary to coordinate activity when dealing with a potential submarine threat.

My uncle, John Leonard Newland went down on the Thorn. My dad was only about 6 when it happened but he still lays a poppy for him every year at the Royal Navy Memorial at Chatham where he is commemorated.

My father Frederick Percival Collins was a leading torpedo man He served on HMS Medway and was in China 1931 I have family photos which are badly water /oil stained due I was told because they were in his wallet when his ship was torpedoed. No mention of this on his service records.
